Disposal of waste tyres is a significant issue across the world. In the UK alone, 100,000 tyres a day are replaced on cars. This equates to approximately 50 million (500,000 tonnes) waste tyres per year.

Since the 2006 ban on sending end of life tyres to landfill, alternative disposal techniques have become more widespread due to the large numbers available.

Steel and fibres are also used when manufacturing tyres. -Especially so in commercial, truck and performance tyres where increased load baring capacity is required. -These materials can be recovered during the size reduction process and be re-used or sold on to third parties, thus increasing the profitability of the recycling plant.
