Seabuckthorn has a developed root system and nitrogen-fixing root nodules. Because of a high resistance to drought, barrenness and salinity, it is considered an excellent tree species in wind-resistance, sand-fixation, water and soil conservation, and soil improvement and has been planted in many parts of China. Now, it has distributed in China's 19 provinces and regions with a total area of about 1.2 million hectares. In the land covered with seabuckthorn, surface runoff is reduced by 80%, topsoil loss by 75%, and wind erosion by 85%. Ecological, economic, social benefits can be achieved by planting seabuckthorn. Since the 1980s, the seabuckthorn industry has been a breakthrough in accelerating control of Loess Plateau and promoting local economic development.
Sea-buckthorn leaves contain several biologically active substances, mainly including more than twenty types of flavonoids and polyphenolic substances, alkaloid (5-hydroxytryptamine and SOD), vitamins C, E, A, B1, B2, K and carotin, trace elements, calcium, iron, zinc, ketone, selenium, amino acids (including 8 kinds of essential amino acids which are not contained by foods and which can't be synthesized by the human body).
