An optical fiber cable is a cable containing one or more optical fibers that are used to carry light. The optical fiber elements are typically individually coated with plastic layers and contained in a protective tube suitable for the environment where the cable will be deployed. Different types of cable are used for different applications, for example long distance telecommunication, or providing a high-speed data connection between different parts of a building.
A fiber-optic system is similar to the copper wire system that fiber-optics is replacing. The difference is that fiber-optics use light pulses to transmit information down fiber lines instead of using electronic pulses to transmit information down copper lines. Looking at the components in a fiber-optic chain will give a better understanding of how the system works in conjunction with wire based systems.
Structure:
- Loose tube
- Central loose tube coated with water blocking tape
- Elliptic corrugated steel tape coated with PE jacket
- Four parallel reinforcing steel wires placed inside the elliptic corrugated steel tape armored layer in shorter axial side

In 1995, first test run of Huiyuan ADSS cable put into operation in Sichuan power grid. After nearly 20 years test, the line still runs safely, which creates the longest run record of domestic ADSS cable.
