Responding to industry demands for cleaner, quieter and more economical mechanical testing, MTS now offers the Model 320 ePost™ Tire-coupled Road Simulator, a portable, highly efficient and reliable solution for a wide range of vehicle testing
Deployed by OEMs around the world, the ePost system employs four electromagnetic linear actuators to replicate road profiles and obstacles, providing test engineers with a highly accurate means for subjecting full-vehicles to real-world conditions in controlled laboratory environments. In contrast with hydraulic simulators, ePost systems employ innovative hybrid linear electric/ pneumatic actuators to achiev significantly reduced operating and maintenance costs. Electric ePost systems also enable a cleaner and more eco-friendly testing environment, and are quiet enough for effective Buzz, Squeak and Rattle (BSR) and Noise, Vibration & Harshness (NVH) testing. The systems can also be integrated within an environmental chamber for testing at temperatures ranging from -40°F to 160°F.
ePost systems are available in three models to accommodate a broad range of vehicle sizes: the ePost 2k is designed for motorcycles, ATVs and small cars; the ePost 4k accommodates passenger cars; and the ePost 6k is intended for larger cars and light trucks.
Patented Hybrid Actuators
The Model 320 ePost Road Simulator represents the full-vehicle application of revolutionary linear electric actuators, developed originally for highly portable track and laboratory based damper test systems. These actuators feature a patented hybrid design that integrates ironless core electromagnetic linear motors, which deliver dynamic force and motion, with pneumatic cylinders that provide static support.
The performance and efficiency advantages of this design are numerous. Ironless core linear motors offer low mass, higher frequency response and high-velocity waveform fidelity. There are none of the cogging effects seen with iron-core motors, and the motor’s focused U-channel magnets minimize radiated electric fields.
The actuator’s pneumatic cylinders effectively reduce current demand and operating temperatures, eliminating the need for complex water cooling systems or chillers – air cooling will suffice. These pneumatic cylinders feature electronic proportional regulators to optimize pressure, and also serve to prevent actuator rotation.
