The B71 is handmade and hand assembled to consistently perform to an exacting standard.
Meets ANSI and ISO standard for Audiometric Testing interface.
The B71 is the industry standard for bone conduction.
Available in 10 ohm impedences. Other special order impedences and/or configurations are available upon request.
BONE-CONDUCTION TONES
Stimuli "2-1-2" (cycles) linearly-gated tones OR 5-cycle Blackman tones (no plateau):
500 Hz: 4 ms rise/fall, 2 ms plateau
0 dB nHL = 67.0 dB peak-to-peak equivalent (ppe) re: 1 µN RMS
1000 Hz: 2 ms rise/fall, 1 ms plateau
0 dB nHL = 54.1 dB ppe re: 1 µN RMS
2000 Hz: 1 ms rise/fall, 0.5 ms plateau
0 dB nHL = 48.7 dB ppe re: 1 µN RMS
4000 Hz: 0.5 ms rise/fall, 0.25 ms plateau
0 dB nHL = 45.7 dB ppe re: 1 µN RMS (Note C)
Transducer: Radioear B-71 bone oscillator
Polarity: Alternating onset polarity! (Alternating essential for bone)
Rate: 39.1/s (or rate close to 37-41/s)
Ipsi Noise: None (at present)
Contra Noise: None (at present): use ipsi/contra asymmetries to determine which cochlea
Occlusion effect (adults): 500Hz: approx. -5dB; 2000Hz: 0dB (data from Small&Stapells, 2003)
Stimulus artifact: BC 30dBnHL or higher produces large artifact, which often triggers EEG artifact reject. To correct, either set "artifact reject region" to after end of stimulus (IHS SmartEP) or turn off EEG artifact reject.
Note A: dB ppe SPL = dB peak (peak hold) minus 3 dB (for tones)
Note B: Rate must be adjusted for specific equipment to ensure averaging does not "skip" stimuli. Some machines require a
timebase of about 24 ms and a rate of about 38.5/s
Note C: Due to excessive acoustic radiation by B71 oscillator at 4000 Hz, 0 dBnHL value is from "both-ears occluded" behavioural data
in a plastic bag.
