Methyl methacrylate (MMA) is a colorless, volatile liquid monomer used primarily to produce polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), a transparent thermoplastic widely known as acrylic or plexiglass.

Chemical Properties

MMA has the chemical formula C₅H₈O₂ and contains a vinyl group (CH₂=) attached to an ester group (–C(O)OCH₃) with a methyl side chain

. It is a highly reactive monomer that undergoes free radical polymerization to form PMMA, a high-molecular-weight polymer

. MMA is soluble in organic solvents such as tetrahydrofuran, toluene, cyclohexanone, ethyl acetate, and chloroform, but insoluble in water and alcohols

. It is flammable and should be kept away from strong oxidizing agents

Synthesis and Polymerization

MMA is typically synthesized through chemical processes that produce the monomer in high purity. It polymerizes via free radical mechanisms, often initiated by compounds like azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) or benzoyl peroxide, forming PMMA

. PMMA can be produced in various forms, including bulk, solution, emulsion, or suspension polymerization, depending on the desired application

Applications

MMA is primarily used to manufacture PMMA, which is valued for its high transparency, lightweight, and ease of machining

. Applications include:

Optical materials: lenses, screens, and light covers

Medical devices: dental prosthetics, bone cements, and surgical instruments

Construction and automotive: windows, panels, and decorative elements

Industrial products: adhesives, coatings, inks, and paints

PMMA derived from MMA is also used in electronics, aerospace, and consumer goods due to its chemical resistance and dimensional stability
