Most of the simultaneous desulfurization and denitrification technologies for flue gas are in the research and industrial demonstration stages. However, since they can achieve both desulfurization and denitrification in one system, especially with the continuous strictness of NOX control standards, simultaneous desulfurization and denitrification technologies are receiving increasing attention from countries around the world. There are mainly three types of simultaneous desulfurization and denitrification technologies for flue gas. The first type is the combined technology of flue gas desulfurization and flue gas denitrification; the second type is to use adsorbents to simultaneously remove SOX and NOX; the third type is to transform the existing flue gas desulfurization (FGD) systems (such as adding denitrification agents to the desulfurization liquid) to add denitrification functions.

The concentrations of SOX and NOX in the flue gas of thermal power plant boilers are not high, but the total amounts are large. If two sets of devices are used for desulfurization and denitrification respectively, not only will it cover a large area, but also the investment, management, and operation costs will be high. In recent years, countries around the world, especially industrialized developed countries, have successively carried out research and development on simultaneous desulfurization and denitrification technologies and have carried out certain industrial applications. According to the statistics of the US Electric Power Research Institute, there are more than 60 new simultaneous desulfurization and denitrification technologies. Among the combined SOX/NOX removal technologies, some use the combined technology of flue gas desulfurization and flue gas denitrogenation, and some use the technology of using adsorbents to simultaneously remove SOX and NOX, both of which can achieve relatively high removal efficiencies.
