Gates Drills are stainless steel instruments designed to enlarge the root canal orifice and prepare the middle and upper thirds of the canal, serving as essential tools for establishing a straight-line glide path in endodontic treatment.
Made from high-quality stainless steel for durability and fracture resistance, they are available in sizes #1 through #6 with optional lengths of 28mm and 32mm. The recommended maximum speed is 800 min⁻¹, and the instruments are fully autoclavable up to 134°C for safe clinical reuse.
Their design restricts use to the straight portion of the canal—they should never be advanced into curved apical segments, which minimizes the risk of separation. Each size follows a defined depth protocol, with #1 engaging deepest and #5–#6 reserved solely for orifice-level preparation above the canal entrance.
Prior to use, always explore and unblock the canal with a #10 or #15 hand file. Gates Drills are supplied in assorted or single-size packs, typically 6 pieces per blister card or box.
