Detailed Description of Shipbuilding Steel Plates
Shipbuilding steel plates are hot-rolled steel plates manufactured in accordance with classification society rules, specially used for hull structure fabrication. Adapted to harsh marine operating conditions, they feature high strength, excellent toughness, good weldability, seawater corrosion resistance and low-temperature brittle fracture resistance. They serve as core structural materials for bulk carriers, oil tankers, container ships, offshore platforms and other marine vessels and facilities.
1. Product Classification & Grade
1.1 Classification by Strength & Quality Grade (Main Specifications)
Normal Strength Ship Plates (Yield Strength ≥235MPa)
Grades: CCSA, CCSB, CCSD, CCSE (Certified by China Classification Society, equivalent to international Grade A/B/D/E).
Low-temperature toughness: Grade A (room temperature), Grade B (0℃), Grade D (-20℃), Grade E (-40℃). The low-temperature anti-brittle performance improves progressively.
High Strength Ship Plates (Yield Strength: 315–420MPa)
Grade 32 (Yield Strength ≥315MPa): AH32, DH32, EH32, FH32 (-60℃).
Grade 36 (Yield Strength ≥355MPa, mainstream steel grade): AH36, DH36, EH36, FH36 (for polar service).
Grade 40 (Yield Strength ≥390MPa, ultra-high strength): AH40, DH40, EH40, FH40.
Special Ship Plates
Corrosion-resistant ship plates: Alloyed with Cu, Ni and Cr elements to resist seawater and salt spray corrosion, suitable for oil tanks and cargo holds.
Low-temperature plates for polar regions: FH32/FH36/FH40, impact energy ≥34J at -60℃, applied to icebreakers and polar LNG carriers.
Z-direction steel (Z15/Z25/Z35): Resistant to lamellar tearing, used for key welded joints of thick plates.
1.2 Classification by Application
Hull structural plates: Outer shell plates, decks, bulkheads, keels and bottom plates for main load-bearing components.
Superstructure plates: Wheel houses, living quarters and surrounding bulkheads, mainly adopting Grade A/B materials.
Offshore engineering dedicated plates: Used for jacket structures, legs and lifting mechanisms of offshore platforms, mostly EH36/FH36.

Note: Impurities of S and P are strictly controlled. The ratio of Mn/C ≥2.5 to guarantee low-temperature toughness and weldability.

4. Dimension Specifications
Thickness: 5–80mm (conventional range: 8–50mm; maximum 200mm for offshore engineering).
Width: 1500–3900mm (mainstream size: 1800–3000mm).
Length: 3000–12000mm. Custom fixed length and multiple length are available.
Delivery condition: As Rolled (AR), Normalized (N), Thermo-Mechanical Control Process (TMCP, mainstream for high strength plates), Quenched & Tempered (QT).
5. Execution Standards & Certifications
Domestic Standard: GB/T 712-2022 Steel for Ship and Offshore Engineering Structures.
International Classification Society Certification: CCS, ABS, BV, DNV, LR. All products are stamped with classification society marks.
Ultrasonic Testing Standard: GB/T 2970, JB/T 4730. Grade Ⅰ/Ⅱ/Ⅲ ultrasonic testing is adopted to ensure no internal cracks or inclusions.
6. Main Characteristics
Excellent low-temperature toughness: Stable impact energy ≥34J at -20℃ to -60℃, capable of resisting wave impact and alternating load.
Superior weldability: Low carbon equivalent (≤0.36). TMCP process reduces crack sensitivity, suitable for complex hull welding structures.
Seawater corrosion resistance: Purified steel and optimized alloy design resist electrochemical corrosion and marine organism adhesion, extending service life of vessels.
Good workability: High ductility under hot-rolled condition, applicable for cold bending, hot bending and cutting to meet complex hull forming requirements.
7. Application Scope
Normal strength grades (A/B/D/E): Inland water vessels, superstructures, decks, bulkheads and inner bottom plates of small and medium-sized ocean-going ships.
High strength grades (AH36/DH36/EH36): Side shell plates, bottom plates, strength decks, keels and hatch covers of large bulk carriers, container ships and oil tankers.
Special grades (FH36 / Z-direction steel): Key load-bearing and welded parts of polar ships, icebreakers, LNG carriers and offshore platforms.
