Your A0 Drawings Are Buried Under Other A0 Drawings
If you manage drawings at a university or archive, you know the drill. A0 sheets are too large for standard filing cabinets, so they end up flat on open shelves. Over time the stack grows, and finding one specific drawing means lifting every sheet above it. By the time you reach the one you need, you’ve forgotten the order. In open-access areas it’s worse — students and researchers flip through stacks, corners get bent, edges fray.
This A0 plan cabinet stores A0 and smaller drawings flat, protected, and organized. Five drawers per section, each with 1205×850×75mm interior clearance. A0 paper (841×1189mm) drops in with about 60mm of finger room on each side. Each drawer holds 80-100 sheets of standard-weight paper. Three sections stack to 15 drawers in under 1.3 square meters of floor space.

The 1205mm drawer width is about 120mm wider than an A0 sheet. That gap isn’t wasted space — you need room to slide your fingers in from the sides. Without it, you’re pinching corners every time you pull a drawing out, and after a few rounds the edges curl.
How Universities and Archives Use 5 Drawers
Architecture school studios typically organize by course and semester. Top two drawers: current semester project drawings. Middle drawer: reference work from previous years. Bottom two: archived thesis drawings going back years. Label slots on each drawer front take a card with the course code and semester — students find what they need without opening every drawer.
Archives sort differently: by year. Recent acquisitions on top, older material below. Labels carry the date range and drawing category (architectural / structural / mechanical). It beats flipping through flat shelves hands down.
Full-extension slides keep drawers level under full load. Cabinets with lighter-gauge slides tilt backward when you pull them out loaded — drawings slide out the gap at the back, scatter on the floor, and you spend the rest of the afternoon re-sorting.
Why Casters Matter in Archives and Libraries
Archive layouts aren’t permanent. New acquisitions come in and shelves get rearranged. Temporary exhibitions need floor space. Annual inventories require pulling cabinets away from the wall to check the back rows. Moving a fixed-base cabinet takes two people lifting. On carpeted reading rooms, it’s worse.
Four swivel casters, two with brakes. Park the cabinet against the wall, step on the brakes, it stays put. Need to move it? Release the brakes and push. In open reading rooms, researchers can wheel the cabinet to their desk, pull the drawings they need, and push it back when finished. The brakes hold on wood floors and waxed surfaces.
Gang Lock — Day-to-Day in an Institutional Setting
One key, five drawers. Lock once at closing, unlock once in the morning.
For architecture schools: lock up after class so drawings don’t walk off. The instructor or teaching assistant unlocks at the start of the next session.
For archives: closing time means one turn and everything is secured. Opening time means one turn and the collection is accessible.
Need per-drawer access control? Individual lock cylinders are available as a custom option — each drawer gets its own key. But for daily operations, one turn beats five turns twice a day, every day.
Cold-Rolled Steel and Matte White Finish
SPCC cold-rolled steel, 0.8mm standard thickness. Electrostatic powder coating, not paint. It doesn’t chip when cabinets bump each other during rearrangement. The color is matte white — not gloss. Archives and reading rooms run fluorescent overhead lights. Gloss finish reflects light and creates glare. Matte white is the industry standard for a reason.
A 1.0mm thickness option is available for high-traffic public reading rooms or environments where the cabinet gets moved daily. Weight and cost increase roughly 15%.
Moving Through Doorways and Installation
Single section: 1300mm wide. Fits through standard doors. Narrow doorway? Carry sections in one at a time — each is only 550mm tall, two people handle it easily — then stack in place. Caster assemblies have a pin that pulls out, dropping another 50mm of height for low thresholds.
Installation: sections stack with alignment pins, casters bolt to the bottom section with a screwdriver. Fifteen minutes.
Who This Plan Cabinet Is For
University architecture and urban planning departments, provincial and municipal archives preserving engineering drawings and maps, library special collections storing large-format posters and cartographic materials, research institutes archiving design documentation, museums managing exhibition drawings and technical records.
Who This Plan Cabinet Is NOT For
Storing A3 or A4 documents — the drawers are too wide and too shallow, you’re paying for unused space. Fire-rated storage — this is a standard steel cabinet, not a fireproof safe. Heavy objects — the 15kg per drawer rating is based on paper, not hardware or tools.
FAQ
Does it hold A1 drawings?
Yes. A1 paper (594×841mm) fits with clearance to spare. The drawers are sized for A0, so anything smaller works fine.
Can I stack more than 3 sections?
Not recommended. Three sections at 1750mm is a comfortable reach height. Going higher puts the top drawers out of easy reach and raises the center of gravity on a wheeled base.
How many sheets per drawer?
Standard 80gsm paper: 80-100 sheets. Tracing paper and vellum are thicker — figure 40-60 sheets.
Is assembly required?
Sections stack on alignment pins, casters bolt to the bottom. One screwdriver, fifteen minutes.
Can I order a different color?
Matte white is standard. Custom RAL colors are available for orders of 10+ sections. Light grey (RAL 7035) and signal blue (RAL 5005) are common choices.
Are drawer dividers available?
Not included standard, but adjustable partition brackets are available as an add-on. They clip into slots inside the drawer walls — split one drawer into two or three compartments.
