Hot Rolled Coil Detailed Product Description

1. Product Definition

Hot Rolled Coil (HRC) is produced by heating continuous casting slab above the recrystallization temperature (about 1100–1250℃), through multi-pass rough rolling and finish rolling, followed by laminar cooling and coiling into strip steel in coil form. It is one of the most fundamental and high-output flat steel products in the steel industry.

2. Production Process

  1. Slab Heating: The continuous casting slab is sent into a walking beam furnace and heated to 1100–1250℃ for uniform plasticity.

  2. High-pressure Water Descaling: Remove surface scale to avoid indentation and ensure surface quality.

  3. Rough Rolling: Rolled into intermediate slab through 3–7 passes, with thickness of 30–60mm.

  4. Finish Rolling: Continuous rolling by 5–7 finishing mills; thickness, width and flatness are automatically controlled by computer, with finish rolling temperature at 800–900℃.

  5. Laminar Cooling: Uniformly cooled to 500–600℃ by dense water spraying to stabilize microstructure and mechanical properties.

  6. Coiling: Finished steel strip is coiled by coiler. After natural cooling, processes such as leveling, straightening, edge cutting, inspection and packaging are completed.

3. Main Specifications (Common Range)

  • Thickness: 1.2–25.4mm (thin coil: 1.2–3.0mm; medium & heavy coil: 3.0–25.4mm)

  • Width: 600–2000mm (mainstream size: 1250mm / 1500mm / 1800mm)

  • Coil Weight: 10–30 tons (regular: 15–25 tons)

  • Inner Diameter: 508mm (standard), 610mm

4. Common Grades & Materials

4.1 Ordinary Carbon Structural Steel

  • Q235B: Most widely used grade with moderate strength, applied in construction, supports and general structural parts.

  • SS400: JIS standard, equivalent to Q235, widely used for general structures and mechanical parts.

4.2 Low Alloy High Strength Steel

  • Q355B/C/D/E: Former 16Mn; high strength and toughness, used for steel structure, bridges and machinery manufacturing.

  • SPA-H: Weathering steel with excellent atmospheric corrosion resistance, suitable for containers, railway vehicles and outdoor structures.

4.3 Special Purpose Steel

  • SAPH370/440: Automotive structural steel with good stamping performance for chassis and frame parts.

  • X42/X52/X65/X70: Pipeline steel with high strength and toughness for oil & gas transmission pipelines.

  • Q245R/Q345R: Pressure vessel steel for boilers, storage tanks and pressure vessels.

5. Surface Features & Mechanical Properties

5.1 Surface Features

  • Scale: Black-gray oxide layer formed under high-temperature rolling with rough surface; usually removed by pickling or sand blasting.

  • Edge: Round edge or slightly blunt edge without sharp corners.

  • Flatness: Relatively flat with slight wave or warpage; dimensional tolerance is looser than cold rolled coil.

5.2 Typical Mechanical Properties (Q235B)

  • Yield Strength (ReH): ≥235MPa

  • Tensile Strength (Rm): 370–500MPa

  • Elongation (A): ≥26%

  • Cold Bending: 180° qualified

5.3 Processing Performance

  • Weldability: Excellent, suitable for arc welding, gas welding and other welding methods.

  • Stamping Performance: Good ductility, easy for bending, stamping and forming.

  • Machinability: Moderate hardness for conventional cutting processing with ordinary surface finish.

6. Main Applications

  1. Steel Structure Construction: Factory buildings, warehouses, high-rise building beams & columns, trusses, floor slabs and guardrails.

  2. Machinery Manufacturing: Machine frames, bases, flanges, gears and stamping parts.

  3. Automotive Industry: Chassis, frame, wheel rims and carriage plates.

  4. Shipbuilding: Hull structure, deck, bulkhead and marine supports.

  5. Energy & Pressure Vessel: Boilers, storage tanks, heat exchangers, oil and gas pipelines.

  6. Other Usage: Containers, railway wagons, agricultural machinery, steel furniture, hardware products; also used as raw material for cold rolled coil, galvanized coil and color coated coil.

7. Product Advantages

  • Cost-effective: Mature production process with low cost, cheaper than cold rolled coil.

  • High Strength & Toughness: Excellent comprehensive mechanical properties to meet structural load requirements.

  • Good Formability: Fine ductility, easy bending, stamping and welding with low processing cost.

  • Wide Application: Covering construction, machinery, automobile, shipbuilding and energy industries.

8. Executive Standards

  • China GB Standard: GB/T 709, GB/T 700, GB/T 1591

  • International Standard: ASTM A36/A572, EN 10025, JIS G3101 / G3113

9. Delivery Condition & Packaging

  • Delivery State: Hot Rolled (HR), Pickled (P), Leveled (S), Edge Cut (EC) / Uncut Edge (UC)

  • Packaging: Bundled with steel strips, moisture-proof & rust-proof packing with edge protectors. Each coil is labeled with specification, grade, batch number, weight and production date.

10. Difference Between Hot Rolled Coil and Cold Rolled Coil

  • Surface: Hot rolled – rough with oxide scale; Cold rolled – smooth without scale

  • Precision: Hot rolled – loose tolerance; Cold rolled – high precision in thickness, width and flatness

  • Performance: Hot rolled – good toughness and elongation; Cold rolled – high hardness and strength

  • Price: Hot rolled – lower cost; Cold rolled – higher cost

  • Usage: Hot rolled – structural parts, thick plate and stamping parts; Cold rolled – precision parts and high surface requirement products
