GI Steel Sheet
Product Spotlights
Galvanized steel sheet is produced under several major international standards. In the United States, ASTM A653 is the key specification, covering steel grades such as CS (Commercial Steel), FS (Lock-Forming Steel), DS (Drawing Steel), and SS (Structural Steel) with grade designations like SS33, SS37, or SS50 indicating minimum yield strength in ksi. For structural applications, ASTM A792 covers Galvalume (aluminum-zinc alloy coated) sheet. In Europe, the EN 10346 standard (formerly EN 10142 and EN 10147) uses designations such as DX51D, DX52D, DX53D, and DX54D, where "D" stands for flat product for cold forming, followed by a number indicating drawing quality; "Z" denotes pure zinc coating. The Japanese standard JIS G3302 uses grades like SGCC (general forming), SGCD (drawing), and SGCE (deep drawing). All these standards specify coating mass (e.g., Z100, Z275, Z450) and surface finish.
Regardless of standard, the manufacturing process remains consistent: continuous hot-dip galvanizing. A cold-rolled low-carbon steel coil is thoroughly cleaned, annealed, and then dipped into a bath of molten zinc at approximately 460°C. A metallurgical bond forms between the zinc and the iron, creating a series of zinc-iron alloy layers topped with a pure zinc layer. This bond is exceptionally strong, allowing the sheet to be cut, bent, and deep-drawn without the coating peeling off. The corrosion resistance of galvanized steel derives from two mechanisms. First, the dense zinc layer acts as a physical barrier isolating the steel from oxygen and moisture. Second, zinc provides galvanic (cathodic) protection: because zinc is more electrochemically reactive than iron, it will preferentially corrode to protect any exposed bare steel if the coating is scratched, preventing rust from spreading.
The construction industry is the largest consumer of galvanized steel sheet. Using ASTM A653 CS Type B or EN DX51D+Z, manufacturers produce roofing panels, wall cladding, gutters, downspouts, and corrugated decking. These materials typically provide a service life of 20 to 50 years, making them cost-effective for agricultural buildings, warehouses, and pre-engineered metal structures. For interior construction, galvanized steel forms suspended ceiling grids (T-bars), metal studs for partition walls, and cable trays. Infrastructure projects also rely heavily on this material: highway guardrails (often SS37 grade), street light poles, traffic signal masts, grain silos, and commercial building ventilation ductwork are all commonly fabricated from galvanized steel sheet.
In the automotive industry, JIS SGCC, EN DX54D+Z, or ASTM A653 DS grades are used for inner panels, floor pans, door inner panels, and structural reinforcements to resist road salt corrosion. The home appliance sector depends on galvanized steel for washing machine cabinets (typically CS Type B or DX51D+Z), refrigerator back panels, air conditioner outdoor units, microwave ovens, and water heater casings. The excellent formability of drawing grades (SGCD, DX53D+Z) allows these products to be deep-drawn into complex shapes while maintaining a long, rust-free life. Other general industrial applications include electrical distribution cabinets, industrial shelving, metal pallets, and steel straps for heavy packaging. In summary, whether specified under ASTM, EN, or JIS, galvanized steel sheet offers an unmatched balance of strength, workability, and corrosion protection across global industry.
