Magnesium sulfate

Magnesium sulfate, also known as anhydrous magnesium sulfate; its heptahydrate (commonly called Epsom salt, bitter salt, or esperidin salt) is an inorganic compound. Its chemical formula is MgSO and its molecular weight is 120.3676 g/mol. Anhydrous magnesium sulfate is usually a white crystal or white powder, belonging to the orthorhombic crystal system; while the common heptahydrate magnesium sulfate (MgSO7HO) is a colorless or white oblique prismatic crystal, belonging to the monoclinic crystal system. The density of the anhydrous form is approximately 2.66 g/cm³, and its melting point is approximately 1124°C (at which temperature it decomposes). This substance is tasteless, has a salty and bitter taste, is hygroscopic, readily soluble in water, slightly soluble in ethanol and glycerol, and insoluble in acetone.

Magnesium sulfate can react with alkalis to form magnesium hydroxide precipitate, and thermally decomposes at high temperatures to produce magnesium oxide and sulfur trioxide gas. Industrially, magnesium sulfate is commonly prepared by recrystallization, evaporation, and hot-melt leaching. In nature, it exists in certain minerals (such as esachet) as well as seawater and salt lake brine.
