Annealed wire is a type of soft iron wire product made from low-carbon steel through processes such as cold drawing, heating, constant temperature treatment, and heat preservation. The composition of iron wire varies depending on its intended use; it contains iron, cobalt, nickel, copper, carbon, zinc, and other elements. Hot metal billets are rolled into 6.5mm thick steel bars (coils), which are then drawn into wires of different diameters using a drawing device. The aperture of the drawing spool is gradually reduced, followed by cooling, annealing, and coating processes to produce iron wire of various specifications.
Iron wire production developed early due to its simple process and wide application. Iron wire or steel wire (the corresponding companies are called "wire mesh companies") is a further cold-processed product of steel wire rod, and the materials used are generally high-quality low-carbon steel or stainless steel. Typically, it involves several processes such as coil peeling, pickling, washing, saponification, drying, drawing, annealing, cooling, pickling, washing, galvanizing, and packaging to produce iron ingots (steel ingots) for making iron wire (steel wire). Currently, the production of iron and steel wire generally employs wire drawing and galvanizing processes. In 1976, the Guangzhou Galvanized Iron Wire Factory pioneered the application of new technologies in China, including electrolytic pickling, high-pressure washing, and electrostatic drying, successfully achieving continuous production on wire drawing lines. This transformed the wire drawing process from intermittent to continuous production, reducing labor intensity and metal consumption. At that time, domestic iron wire factories were already capable of producing products such as steel wire rope, spoke wire, umbrella rib wire, spring wire, and bicycle saddle spring wire. In the 1980s, hot-dip galvanized low-carbon steel wire for staples, fan guard wire, carbon structural steel wire, and bed surface wire also emerged.
The weaving of iron wire mesh can be done using methods such as pre-weaving followed by galvanizing or pre-galvanizing followed by weaving. After treatment, iron or steel wire mesh possesses excellent corrosion resistance and oxidation resistance, making it suitable for reinforcement, protection, and insulation in industries such as construction, petroleum, chemical, aquaculture, landscaping, and food processing. For example, welded wire mesh, widely used in industry, agriculture, animal husbandry, construction, transportation, and mining, is made of high-quality low-carbon iron wire through welding. It then undergoes surface passivation and plasticizing treatments such as cold galvanizing (electroplating), hot-dip galvanizing, and PVC coating. The resulting metal mesh has a flat surface, uniform mesh size, and strong welds, exhibiting stability, corrosion resistance, and excellent rust resistance. Stainless steel welded wire mesh, on the other hand, is made of high-quality stainless steel wire through welding. Applications include machine guards, livestock fences, flower and tree fences, window guards, passageway fences, poultry cages, and household/office food baskets, wastepaper baskets, and decorative items. It is even more acid- and alkali-resistant, has strong welds, and is aesthetically pleasing.
