A tractor unit, also known as a trailer tractor, is a specialized commercial vehicle designed to tow trailers. It has no cargo-carrying capacity itself but acts as the **"power head"** of a truck train, providing traction. It is a core piece of equipment in modern logistics, ports, and engineering fields.
Semi-trailer tractor units:
I. Core Definition and Structure
Core Features: The tractor unit and trailer are detachable and connected via a **towing saddle (semi-trailer)** / **towing hook (full trailer)**, with independent power, control, and braking systems.
Basic Structure
Chassis: Reinforced beams, heavy-duty suspension, large-tonnage axles
Power: Large-displacement diesel engine (350-600+ horsepower), strong torque
Connection Devices
Semi-trailer towing seat (saddle/fifth wheel): The front of the semi-trailer rests on it, the tractor bears approximately 20%-30% of the trailer weight
Towing hook/drawbar: Full trailer connection, only provides traction, does not bear weight
Cabin: High floor (flat floor/raised floor), long-distance comfort type, double sleeper berth
Braking: Air brakes, ABS/ESC, trailer synchronized braking

1. Semi-trailer Tractor (Mainstream)
Connection: Saddle connects the semi-trailer, sharing the load
Features: High load capacity, good stability, high speed and high efficiency

3. In-plant/Industrial Tractor
Power: Electric/Internal Combustion
Features: Compact, low speed, high maneuverability, no cargo box.

4. Special Tractor
Heavy-duty transport tractor: 6×6, 8×8 all-wheel drive, towing equipment up to 100 tons.
Off-road/Military tractor: Extremely cold, muddy, off-road heavy-duty.
Special purpose tractor: Firefighting, rescue, obstacle clearing, oil fields.
III. Drive Type (Common)
4×2 (Dual Axle): High efficiency and fuel saving, mainstream for high-speed standard loads.
6×2 (Triple Axle): Lift axle, lightweight, heavy-duty.
6×4 (Triple Axle Dual Drive): Heavy-duty, mountainous, climbing, mainstay for cold chain transport.
