1. Definition
Steel wire is one of the four main steel products (plate, pipe, section, wire), produced by cold drawing from hot-rolled wire rod.
2. Classification
By Cross-section Shape
- Round steel wire (most common, diameter 0.1–16mm)
- Special shapes: square, rectangular, flat, triangular, oval, etc.
By Diameter (GB/T 341)
- Extra fine: ＜0.1mm
- Fine: 0.1–0.5mm
- Medium fine: 0.5–1.5mm
- Medium: 1.5–3.0mm
- Coarse: 3.0–6.0mm
- Extra coarse: ＞8.0mm
By Chemical Composition
- Low carbon steel wire: C ≤ 0.25% (binding, welding wire, mesh, packaging)
- Medium carbon steel wire: 0.25% ＜ C ≤ 0.60% (general springs, structures)
- High carbon steel wire: C ＞ 0.60% (springs, steel wire rope, prestressed, piano wire)
- Alloy steel wire: for high strength, corrosion resistance, heat resistance
By Surface Treatment
- Uncoated (bright / black wire)
- Galvanized steel wire: electro-galvanized, hot-dip galvanized
- Copper/brass plated: tire bead wire, cord wire
- Aluminum / Zn-Al coated, phosphated, PVC coated
By Tensile Strength (MPa)
- Low strength: ＜390MPa
- Normal strength: 785–1225MPa
- High strength: 1225–1960MPa
- Extra-high strength: 1960–3135MPa
3. Common Grades & Standards
- Carbon spring steel wire: 65Mn, 70#, 72A, 82B
- Standards: GB/T 4357, ASTM A227/A228, JIS G3522, EN standards
- Galvanized wire: Q195, Q235, 45# (GB/T 343, ASTM A641)
- Piano wire: SWP-A, SWP-B
- Steel rope wire: high carbon, 1770–2160MPa
4. Production Process
1. Wire rod pretreatment: pickling → phosphating → lubrication
2. Cold drawing
3. Heat treatment: annealing, tempering, quenching
4. Surface coating: galvanizing, copper plating, etc.
5. Final inspection, coiling and packing
