GENERAL PROPERTIES
Duplex 2205 is a superior two-phase, ferritic and austenitic stainless steel, expertly alloyed with 22% chromium, 3% molybdenum, and 5-6% nickel. As the most widely used duplex stainless steel grade, it boasts a yield strength twice that of standard austenitic grades. Additionally, it offers remarkable fatigue strength and outstanding resistance to stress corrosion cracking, crevice, pitting, erosion, and general corrosion, even in the most challenging environments.

CORROSION RESISTANCE
Thanks to its high chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen content, Duplex 2205 offers superior corrosion resistance compared to 316 and 316L in most environments.
The chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen content also ensures high resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion, even in oxidizing and acidic solutions.
Resistant to chloride stress corrosion cracking and effective at temperatures up to approximately 302°F (150°C).
The ferrite presence enhances the performance of Duplex 2205 in caustic environments.
HEAT RESISTANCE
Similar to other duplex stainless steels, Duplex 2205 exhibits excellent oxidation resistance at high temperatures.
However, it is prone to embrittlement when exposed to temperatures above 572°F (300°C) for even short periods, making it unsuitable for use beyond this temperature.
WELDING CHARACTERISTICS
Duplex 2205 showcases good weldability.
Generally, it should not be welded without filler metal to avoid excessive ferrite formation.
HEAT TREATMENT
The annealing temperature range is between 1868 to 2012°F (1020 to 1100°C).
It cannot be hardened by heat treatment, though it does work-harden.
Special considerations are necessary to compensate for a higher coefficient of thermal expansion, preventing warping and distortion.
PROCESSING - HOT FORMING
Most producers recommend a maximum hot forming temperature between 2010 and 2100°F (1100 to 1150°C). If the workpiece shape is not compact, the edges may cool faster than the bulk, risking cracks in cooler regions.
PROCESSING - COLD FORMING
Duplex 2205 exhibits excellent formability across a variety of fabrications. However, the high strength inherent in Duplex 2205 can present challenges. Even with adequately powerful equipment, allowances must be made for the increased spring-back due to the grade's elevated strength.
MACHINABILITY
Duplex 2205 is marginally more challenging to machine compared to 300 series austenitic stainless steels. This demands higher cutting forces, leading to accelerated tool wear. Key machining guidelines include: A) Employ powerful, rigid machinery with robust, secure mounting of tools and workpieces, B) Minimize vibration by maintaining short tool extensions, C) Utilize a nose radius on the tool that is only as long as necessary, ensuring sharp edges on carbides with adequate strength, and D) Design machining sequences to always achieve a depth of cut below the work-hardened layer from previous passes.
Features of Duplex 2205 Stainless Steel Coils
Type 2205 is a duplex (austenitic/ferritic) stainless steel enriched with chromium, molybdenum, and nitrogen, enhancing its performance and corrosion resistance compared to 304 and 316 stainless steels. The alloy's mixed austenite/ferrite microstructure, coupled with these additives, provides formidable resistance to stress corrosion cracking, pitting, and ***-induced crevice corrosion. Alloy 2205 maintains acceptable oxidation resistance up to 980°C. However, specific applications should be considered, as the material can become brittle when exposed to temperatures between 300°C and 1000°C for prolonged periods. Type 2205 stainless steel strip, coil, and sheet are suitable for a diverse range of applications.
Commonly Used Surface Finishes of Stainless Steel Coils
The surface finish of 201 stainless steel coils can vary based on the cold rolling processes and subsequent surface treatments employed. Available treatments include NO.1, 2B, 4, HL, 6, 8, BA, TR hard, heavy rolling bright 2H, polished bright, and other specialized finishes:
NO.1: This surface finish is achieved after hot rolling, heat treatment, and pickling of stainless steel strip. It removes black oxide scale formed during hot rolling and heat treatment. The No. 1 surface is silvery white and matte, ranking highest in surface treatment. It is typically utilized in heat-resistant and corrosion-resistant industries that do not require high surface gloss, such as the alcohol industry, chemical industry, and large container manufacturing.
2B: In contrast to the 2D surface, the 2B surface is refined by a light roller, resulting in a brighter finish. The surface roughness Ra value, measured by equipment, ranges from 0.1 to 0.5μm, a standard value for most processing types. This surface has the greatest adaptability and is suitable for industries like chemicals, papermaking, petroleum, medical fields, and building curtain walls.
TR Hard Surface: TR stainless steel, also known as hard steel, includes grades such as 304 and 301. It is used in high-strength, high-hardness applications like railway vehicles, conveyor belts, springs, and washers. The aim is to leverage the work-hardening characteristics of austenitic stainless steel to enhance the strength and hardness of steel plates through cold working methods such as rolling. To replace the flatness of the 2B base surface, the hard material undergoes gentle rolling by a few percent to tens of percent, without annealing post-rolling. Thus, the TR hard surface reflects the rolled finish after cold rolling.
Re-rolled Bright 2H: Following the rolling operation, the stainless steel strip undergoes a sophisticated bright annealing process. Utilizing a continuous annealing line, the strip is rapidly cooled while traveling at a speed of 60-80m/min. This method ensures the surface finish achieves a re-rolled bright 2H appearance, delivering superior quality and luster.
No. 4: The No. 4 surface boasts an impressive polishing effect, significantly brighter than No. 3. This finish is achieved by polishing the cold-rolled stainless steel plate with a 2D or 2B surface using a sanding belt with a particle size of 150-180#. The surface roughness (Ra) ranges between 0.2 and 1.5μm, measured meticulously by specialized tools. Widely recognized for its versatility, the No. 4 surface finds extensive applications in restaurants, cooking equipment, medical instruments, architectural decoration, containers, and more.
HL: The HL surface, or hairline finish, is a hallmark of sophistication. Defined by the Japanese JIS standard, it features a continuous hairline abrasive surface produced using a 150-240# abrasive belt. The Chinese GB3280 standard provides less clarity on the specifics, yet HL remains a favorite for architectural decoration, including elevators, escalators, and exterior walls, thanks to its elegant and polished appearance.
No. 6: The No. 6 surface undergoes additional polishing on top of the No. 4 finish using a Tampico brush or W63 grit abrasive material as specified in the GB2477 standard. This process results in a surface with excellent metallic luster, softness, gentle reflection, and no imaging. These properties make it ideal for curtain walls, tassel decorations, and high-quality cooking supplies.
BA: The BA surface is achieved through a bright heat treatment after cold rolling. This involves annealing in a protective atmosphere to prevent oxidation and retain the glossy cold-rolled finish. The surface is then polished with a high-precision smooth roller to enhance brightness. Its surface roughness is evaluated to be between 0.05-0.1μm, nearing mirror-like quality. BA surfaces are highly versatile, suitable for food utensils, household appliances, medical devices, automotive parts, and decorative applications.
No. 8: The No. 8 surface, also known as the mirror finish, offers maximum reflectivity with no abrasive particles. Referred to as 8K board in the stainless steel processing industry, it requires minimal polishing if made from BA material. Its stunning, reflective surface makes it ideal for building entrances and interior decoration, adding a touch of elegance.
