[Main characteristics]

The crape myrtle tree is a deciduous small tree. The height of the seedling is 3~15 meters, and the diameter can reach 1 meter. The flower colors are colorful. The common ones are white, red, pink and purple. The flowering period is long, starting in May and ending in September every year. The seeds mature in October. The crape myrtle tree is an excellent garden ornamental tree species and one of the excellent bonsai tree species. The bark is smooth, and the old bark falls off during the growth period. The oval leaves are opposite, the whole-margin leaves are smooth on the surface, the twigs are green, and the inflorescence is conical. The crape myrtle only blooms on new branches, and there are no flowers on old branches.

Currently, various foreign varieties of crape myrtle are popular in the market, such as American Red Rocket, American All-year Red, Red, Fast-growing Crape Myrtle and other varieties. Changjing Garden advises you to be cautious when planting in new nurseries and not to blindly pursue new varieties. New varieties may not necessarily make money, and their performance varies in different places. Landscape greening mainly uses native tree species. The usage of foreign varieties is very small. Take the American Red Maple as an example. Although the price has been hyped up, the terminal usage is pitifully small. Even if the seedlings are well-grown, they cannot be sold.

[Seedling Raising Experience Sharing]

Crape myrtle is a sun-loving tree species. Its growth requires a large amount of water, fertilizer, and sunlight. The basic environmental requirements are fertile soil, smooth drainage, good air permeability, and a warm and humid climate. Crape myrtle trees can live for a thousand years. Propagation is mainly through sowing. This method has low costs and a fast propagation speed, and the seedlings grown are the main seedling-raising method in various places.

The sowing season is from February to April. Crape myrtle seeds are extremely small and easy to collect. No germination promotion is required for planting. The seedbed soil is required to be loose and breathable, and sandy soil with good drainage and irrigation is preferred. Before sowing, plow and crush the soil and pick out roots, weeds, and other things. After evenly spreading the seeds on the seedbed, just sprinkle a layer of fine sand. Regularly observe the soil moisture, and the seedlings will emerge in about 10 - 15 days. In the initial stage, a sunshade net needs to be set up. Cover it for sun protection from 2 to 3 pm every day, and remove the sunshade net after 20 days.

If you want to cultivate a beautiful tree shape, the seedlings need to be cut back to the ground once a year. After cutting back, the crape myrtle seedlings can grow 2 meters tall and 1 cm thick in the same year, which also requires the cooperation of water and fertilizer management. It is recommended that the fixed pole height in the nursery be 1.2, 1.5, and 1.8 meters. Raise some seedlings at each height to meet the needs of different customers and for forward-looking cultivation. The plant spacing for seedlings of 3 - 5 cm in diameter is recommended to be 1 * 1.5 meters, 1.8 * 2.5 meters for seedlings of 6 - 8 cm, and 3 * 4 meters for seedlings over 10 cm. Crape myrtle is cold-resistant and fertilizer-tolerant. It needs a large amount of water and fertilizer during the growth period. Fertilize 2 - 3 times in spring and summer, using 80 kilograms of compound fertilizer per mu each time. Spread it before rain or bury it at the roots. Fertilize 1 - 2 times in summer and autumn, using 60 kilograms of compound fertilizer per mu. In winter, spread 3 - 4 tons of chicken manure, cow manure, or pig manure per mu. With a large amount of fertilizer for growth promotion, it can grow 2 - 3 cm per year, resulting in very high economic benefits.
