Containerized DTRO Leachate Treatment Plant.
Sources of landfill leachate
Landfill leachate constitutes an internal water flow formed by liquids produced from waste decomposition combined with infiltrating external moisture (including precipitation, surface water, and groundwater). It contains diverse metabolic substances and water, resulting in a highly complex, high-concentration organic wastewater.
The generation and water balance of landfill leachate are shown in the figure below.
Schematic Diagram of Water Balance in Landfill Sites
As shown in the figure above, the primary sources of leachate include:
Infiltration of precipitation: Precipitation, comprising rainfall and snowfall, constitutes the primary source of seepage water.
1)Influx of external surface water: This includes surface runoff and surface irrigation.
2)Groundwater infiltration: When the leachate water level within the landfill falls below the groundwater level outside the site and no impermeable barrier system is installed, groundwater may infiltrate into the landfill。
3)Moisture inherent in the waste itself: This encompasses both the moisture carried within the waste material and the amount absorbed from atmospheric humidity and rainfall.
4)Moisture generated during the degradation of waste: The organic components within waste produce moisture as they decompose in landfill sites.。
From the above analysis of leachate sources, it is evident that the generation of landfill leachate is influenced by multiple factors, such as rainfall, evaporation, surface runoff, groundwater infiltration, waste characteristics, subsoil structure, surface soil cover, and the configuration of underlying drainage facilities.
