"Carbide-tipped mace-shaped welding rods" typically refer to YD-type carbide surfacing welding rods, named for the "wolf's tooth" shape of the carbide particles embedded on their surface.

These welding rods are primarily used to deposit an extremely wear-resistant layer of carbide onto the surface of metal workpieces to enhance their wear resistance.

Core Applications

Mainly used in the petroleum, mining, coal mining, geological, and construction industries for surfacing reinforcement or repair of severely worn or cutting workpieces. Common applications include:

Petroleum tools: milling shoes, grinding shoes, centralizers, reamers, drill pipe joints

Mining machinery: coal planer blades, core drill bits, piling drill bits, auger drill bits

Others: road construction cutter heads, hydraulic cutting tools, scraper blades, etc.

Product Composition

Carbide particles: The main component is cobalt-containing tungsten carbide (WC), which has extremely high hardness (HRA 89-91) and is the core component for wear resistance.

Matrix alloy: Usually a "nickel-copper" alloy or copper-based alloy, which acts to bond and fix the carbide particles while providing a certain degree of toughness.

Special marking: The welding rod is coated with a special flux and colored to indicate the particle size grade.

Usage Process

Welding method: Surfacing is performed using an oxygen-acetylene flame (gas welding).

Supporting materials: It usually needs to be used in conjunction with special root pass electrodes (YD-D) and flux (YD-R) to ensure the quality and bonding strength of the weld overlay.

Operating points: The flame should be adjusted to a neutral or slightly carburizing flame, and the flame tip should not directly contact the carbide particles and the workpiece surface to avoid overheating.
