A gas washing bottle is an instrument used to remove impurities from gases. It works by bubbling impure gases through a selected appropriate liquid medium for absorption (dissolution or due to chemical reactions), thereby removing the impurity gases to achieve the purpose of purifying the gases. In an experimental device with a combustible gas source, the gas washing bottle can also function as a safety bottle.
The gas washing bottle is filled with a selected liquid to wash the gas and remove moisture or other gaseous impurities. When using it, pay attention to the gas flow direction. The inlet and outlet pipes cannot be connected in reverse. The gas washing bottle should not hold alkaline liquid detergents for a long time. After use, pour the detergent into a reagent bottle with a rubber stopper for storage, and then clean the bottle with water and put it aside. This bottle can also be used to collect gas and calculate the volume of the gas. Generally, the gas enters through the long tube and exits through the short tube. The long tube is for gases with a density greater than that of air, and the short tube is for gases with a density less than that of air.
Using the upward air displacement method indicates that the density of the collected gas is greater than that of air. Allowing the gas to enter through the long tube and exit through the short tube enables the collected gas to push the air out. If the gas enters through the short tube and exits through the long tube, the collected gas will directly escape from the long tube.
