Low Height Bunk Bed with Stairs & Storage HG-BB067 | 180cm for UK Schools with Low Ceilings
The HG-BB067 is a steel bunk bed made for one job: fitting proper boarding accommodation into rooms that were never designed for bunk beds. It stands 180cm tall overall, comes with access stairs and storage built into the steps, and runs on cold-rolled steel profiles from our own production line. UK boarding schools, training centres and residential colleges order it when a standard 200cm bunk simply will not work in the room they have.
Why 180cm Matters in Older Buildings
A lot of UK school accommodation lives in period buildings. Ceilings sit at 2.4 metres or lower. Doorways are narrow. Staircases have tight turns. A standard bunk bed at 190 to 200cm tall eats most of that headroom. The top sleeper ends up close to the ceiling, and the frame often will not pass through a doorway when carried on its side.
The HG-BB067 keeps overall height at 180cm. That buys the top bunk real clearance under a low ceiling, and it keeps the frame manageable when your maintenance team moves it through corridors and fire doors. If your room survey shows a ceiling of 2.2 metres or less, this is the height you should be comparing against everything else on your list.

Stairs Instead of Ladders — and Why Schools Keep Asking for Them
A ladder is fine for a confident sixteen-year-old. It is less fine at 3am in the dark, or when a younger child is carrying a glass of water, or when a house parent has to climb up and down during rounds. That is why schools and boarding houses ask us for stair access and not ladders.
The HG-BB067 stairs are widened and surfaced with anti-slip tread. Each step sits at a comfortable rise, so a child with an armful of bedding can get up and down without needing both hands free. For junior boarding and prep school accommodation, stairs are the difference between a bed that gets used properly and one that gets complained about.
Storage Built Into the Steps
Boarding rooms are almost always short on floor space. Every square metre counts, and separate wardrobes or drawer units eat into it fast. With the HG-BB067, the storage is already in the bed: each stair step opens as a compartment for bedding, uniform, shoes or books.
The bed boards are wood-grain panels with anti-slip strips, so the sleeping surface is quiet and items stay put. If you are refitting a room and want to remove a separate chest of drawers from the furniture list, the stairs do that job.
The Steel Work That Carries the Load
The frame is cold-rolled steel, not tube-and-sheet improvisation. The four posts are 83 × 63 × 1.0 mm rolled sections. The side rails are 93 × 35 × 1.0 mm profiles with two reinforcement ribs pressed along the outer face — about 5mm wide and 2mm deep each. That ribbing is what stops the rails flexing when a restless sleeper turns over on the top bunk.
A bold horizontal brace ties the frame together mid-span. Connections use a buckle clip design, which means fewer bolts, faster assembly, and no loose hardware to chase down later. Protective foot pads sit under every post so the frame does not chew up vinyl or wooden floors. The finish is electrostatic powder coating — silver grey as standard, with blue or dark blue door panels as an option.
Safety Details Worth Checking on Any Bunk
The upper bunk carries a full-length guardrail. Steps are widened and anti-slip. Bed boards have anti-slip strips. Foot pads protect floors and stop the frame sliding on smooth surfaces. None of this is exotic — but these are exactly the details school buyers should tick off a checklist, because they are what separates a bed that passes inspection from one that does not.
In the UK, bunk beds for institutional use are checked against BS EN 747. We keep test reports and factory inspection records on file. Ask for the documents that apply to this model when you send your RFQ, and we will include them.
Steel vs Timber: What We Hear From Schools
When schools come to us, the comparison is usually steel against the timber bunks they are replacing. Three points come up every time.
First, fire. Steel does not add fuel to a fire, and that matters in buildings where fire risk assessments are getting stricter. Schools upgrading after an assessment tend to replace timber bunks with steel frames.
Second, hygiene. Steel wipes down with standard cleaning products. There are no cracks or joints for pests to settle into, and the powder coat stands up to routine cleaning without flaking.
Third, lifespan. Timber beds sag, warp with humidity, and loosen at the joints. Steel keeps its shape. The schools that buy steel once tend to buy steel again when they expand.
Assembly, Delivery and Spares
Two people can assemble one HG-BB067 in under an hour. The buckle clip connections do most of the work, and the steps slot into the frame without special tools. For large orders, we also offer flat-pack (KD) packing, which cuts container volume and shipping cost per bed.
Spare parts stay available for years after your order. Bed boards, steps, guardrails, foot pads — all replaceable from stock. Delivery terms to the UK, whether door-to-door or port delivery, are confirmed in writing on your proforma before production starts.
The 1-Year Warranty, In Plain Words
Every HG-BB067 ships with a 1-year warranty covering the frame and welds under normal institutional use. If a weld fails or a profile cracks, you send photos and your order number, and we ship the replacement part. We would rather send a part than argue about it.
The warranty covers manufacturing defects, not deliberate damage — but wear items like bed boards and anti-slip strips are cheap to replace and stocked as spares either way.
Custom Sizes, Colours and Project Runs
The standard footprint is 2,000 × 900 × 1,800 mm. If your rooms need something shorter, longer, or narrower, we customise. School colours on the frame and door panels are available on project runs — give us your branding and we will quote it. Custom runs have minimums, so tell us your quantity when you ask.

Can the HG-BB067 fit through a standard UK doorway?
Yes. At 1,800mm overall height it passes through standard door openings during installation, and for large projects it ships in parts and is assembled in the room.
Does it meet BS EN 747?
We build to the safety features covered by the standard — guardrail height, gap sizing and frame strength. Test reports and inspection records are available; ask for them with your RFQ.
How many beds fit in a typical dorm?

What is the lead time for 50 to 100 beds?
