Function
Piston rings: divided into compression (gas) rings and oil-control ring.
- Compression rings seal the combustion chamber and transfer heat, preventing gas leakage into the crankcase and conducting heat from the piston crown to the cylinder wall.
- The oil-control ring meters oil to maintain an optimal lubricating film on the cylinder wall and scrapes off excess oil to ensure an even, moderate oil ilm.
Specifications
Ring gap (BMW engines):
- Compression-ring gap: 0.25–0.30 mm
- Oil-control-ring gap: 2.0–3.0 mm
Ring location:
- Compression rings are fitted in the 1st and 2nd grooves.
- Oil-control ring is installed in the 3rd groove.
