ABS is typically a shallow yellow or milky white granular amorphous resin. ABS is one of the most widely used general-purpose plastics in the world. There are various production methods for ABS, which can be categorized into four major types—blending, grafting, combined, and emulsion methods—comprising approximately eleven preparation processes. Currently, the emulsion method is the most commonly used, while the emulsion grafting method holds the greatest potential for future development. By adjusting the proportions of the three monomers and employing different polymerization techniques, ABS can be manufactured into products of various specifications. Its structure includes graft copolymers with an elastic backbone and those with a resin backbone. Generally, the ratio range of the three monomers is roughly divided as follows: acrylonitrile 25%~35%, butadiene 25%~30%, and styrene 40%~50%

Each monomer in ABS possesses distinct properties. Morphologically, ABS is an amorphous material, which determines its characteristics such as low-temperature resistance, impact resistance, surface appearance, low creep, excellent dimensional stability, and ease of processing. Additionally, it exhibits high surface hardness and good chemical resistance. By adjusting the proportions of these three components, various properties of ABS can be modified, making it widely applicable. Synthesized ABS is categorized into four types: medium-impact, high-impact, ultra-high-impact, and heat-resistant. Due to its toughness, rigidity, and hardness, its application scope has far exceeded that of PS, becoming an independent plastic category. ABS can be used for both general plastics and engineering plastics.
