(1) Hafnium is a metallic element with the symbol Hf, atomic number 72, and atomic weight 178.49. Elemental substance is a shiny silver gray transition metal. (2) Hafnium does not react with dilute hydrochloric acid, dilute sulfuric acid, and strong alkaline solutions, but is soluble in hydrofluoric acid and aqua regia (3) The main use of hafnium is to make control rods for nuclear reactors. (4) Pure hafnium is an important material in the atomic energy industry due to its plasticity, ease of processing, high temperature resistance, and corrosion resistance. (5) Hafnium has a large thermal neutron capture cross-section and is an ideal neutron absorber, which can be used as a control rod and protective device for atomic reactors. (6) In the electrical industry, cathodes for X-ray tubes can be manufactured. Hafnium alloy can be used as a forward protective layer for rocket nozzles and gliding reentry vehicles, while Hf Ta alloy can be used to manufacture tool steel and resistance materials. |
