Railway lock spikes, also known as dog spikes or anti-theft spikes, are specially designed fasteners used to secure rails to ties (or sleepers) in railway tracks. These spikes are not easily removed, making them less vulnerable to vandalism and theft. They typically have a unique shape or locking mechanism that requires specific tools or methods for removal.
Lock spikes are primarily used to prevent the rails from being lifted or moved laterally, ensuring the stability and safety of the track. Lock spikes are crucial for maintaining the integrity of railway tracks and deterring vandalism and theft. These spikes are a type of railroad spike designed to create a more secure hold for the rail on the tie (the wood or concrete sleepers on which the rail is mounted).
Besides lock spikes, other types of railroad spikes include cut spikes, drive spikes, dog spikes, screw spikes, and elastic spikes. Cut spikes are the most common, while the others are used in specific applications for enhanced holding power or vibration resistance.
A railroad dog spike is also known as railroad cut track spike, railway nail, rail crampons,railway nail spikes. It is a large nail used to secure rails to wooden sleepers in a railway track. The main function of a railroad dog spike is to fasten T-shaped railway track to wooden sleepers, to secure a rail and tie plate to the ties in track, which has a pointed penetrating head with square shank, and the underside of the spike head is sloped to compromise the top of the rail base.
Dog spikes are named for the two lugs on either side, which make them look like a dog's head. This dog spike with two-dog-eared shape is widely used in European countries. There is also a dog spike with a spoon-shaped head. It is similar to a large rail with square shape and a pointed penetrating head. This type dog spike is more popular in American countries. And you may see the railroad dog spike with a a large square rail with an obtuse angled penetrating tail. These railroad spikes are widely used in Australia.
Rail dog spikes are usually made of steel, which is iron with added carbon. High carbon steel is most commonly used, with a carbon content of approximately 0.7–2.5%. In China, the raw material of the railroad dog spikes are Q235,35K,45#,etc.
