Nickel Cadmium Battery is an alkaline battery with metal cadmium as the negative electrode and nickel hydroxide as the positive electrode. It uses potassium hydroxide solution as the electrolyte and has a nominal voltage of 1.2V. Its structure consists of nickel coated steel strip plates, polyamide non-woven fabric isolation layer, and plastic/nickel plated steel shell. The main types include cylindrical sealed, buckle sealed, and square sealed [1] [3] [6].
This battery has a wide temperature adaptability of -40 ℃ to 60 ℃, a cycle life of over 3000 times, and a high current discharge ability at a rate of 10C, but there is a memory effect problem [4-5]. Charging requires controlling the current to 1/10 of the capacity to avoid overcharging and overdischarging [2] [8]. The large open type model is used for emergency power supplies such as locomotives and mining equipment, while the sealed type is suitable for electric tools and small electronic devices. The negative electrode excess design can absorb oxygen evolution to achieve sealing. Due to cadmium pollution, this battery is gradually being replaced by environmentally friendly nickel hydrogen batteries
The main characteristics of cadmium nickel batteries are:
(1) Electrolyte only serves as a conductor of current and its concentration does not change.
(2) The degree of charge and discharge of a battery cannot be determined by changes in the density of the electrolyte, but rather by changes in voltage during charging.
(3) During the charging and discharging process, as the electrochemical reaction intensifies, oxygen gas is released on the positive electrode plate, and hydrogen gas is released on the negative electrode plate·
(4) Sealed nickel barrier batteries are manufactured with excessive material on the negative electrode plate to prevent the release of hydrogen gas. The oxygen generated on the positive electrode is absorbed by the negative electrode plate due to electrochemical effects, preventing gas accumulation inside the battery and ensuring its normal operation under sealed conditions.
