Ceramic frits are vitreous substances that are insoluble in water. Frits are obtained by fusing a mixture of rigorously controlled raw materials at high temperatures. The resulting fused material is poured, in liquid form, into water to cool it so that it solidifies into small fragments of glass. With frits, water-soluble raw materials (boron, sodium, potassium etc) can be used in such a way that they are inert, by transforming the mixture into glass that is harmless for human health and the environment.
