What's the Functions?
Corn Bran
Corn bran is a food product produced from the tough outer layer of corn. Like the brans derived from other grain crops, it is very high in fiber, and it can be used in a wide variety of ways. Many commercial food producers use this substance as a filler in their foods, and to reduce the caloric value of snack foods. It can also be used in home cooking to increase the fiber content of various foods and to add texture. Corn bran can be processed and sold independently, or simply left on the corn as it is ground into flour. Many corn products such as grits include the bran and the germ for extra nutritional value, and some finer-ground corn flour products may be produced with the bran intact as well. When whole grain corn flour is used in a recipe, it tends to be more coarse than white corn flour, with a more complicated texture and flavor.
Rice Bran
The outer layer of the grain (bran) and the oil produced from the bran are used for medicine. Rice bran oil is popular as a “healthy oil” in Japan, Asia, and particularly India. Be careful not to confuse rice bran with other forms of bran such as oat and wheat bran.
Rice bran is used for treating diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol,alcoholism, obesity, and AIDS; for preventing stomach and colon cancer; for preventing heart and blood vessel (cardiovascular) disease; for strengthening the immune system; for increasing energy and improving athletic performance; for improving liver function; and as an antioxidant.
Rice bran oil is also used for high cholesterol.
Some people apply rice bran directly to the skin for an allergic skin rash calledeczema (ectopic dermatitis).
Wheat Bran
The outer shell of the grain (the bran) is used to make medicine.
Wheat bran is used as a source of dietary fiber for preventing colon diseases (including cancer), stomach cancer, breast cancer, gallbladder disease,hemorrhoids and hiatal hernia. It is also used for treating constipation, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and type 2 diabetes. Wheat bran helps constipation by speeding up the colon and increasing stool output and bowel frequency.
