The Soilmec XHD5 (Extra Heavy Duty 5-inch) is a heavy-duty continuous flight auger (CFA) string and coupling system specifically designed for high-torque applications on Soilmec SF and SR-series piling rigs.

1. Coupling Mechanical Design
Connection Type: Quick-coupling hexagonal joint (typically a hex size for standard XHD5 strings).
Locking Mechanism: Secured using two high-tensile safety pins driven through the hex joint to prevent rotational and axial disconnection during high-torque drilling and rapid extraction phases.
Material Construction: Manufactured using premium high-grade structural steel (often using 35CrMo or equivalent thick-walled tubing) to handle intense torsional shearing and cyclic bending stresses.
2. Internal Dimensions & Concrete Flow

Double-Wall Stem Construction: Unlike standard HD5 models, the XHD5 features a reinforced double-wall central stem. Bottom Discharge Protection: The lead auger element utilizes a disposable, pressure-blasted end plug or a mechanical flap gate to block soil or water entry during drilling. It is displaced under pressure the moment concreting commences during extraction.
