Main role
The filter, as its name implies, is a device that filters the waves. Wave is a very broad physical concept. In the field of electronic technology, "wave" is narrowly confined to describing the process of fluctuating the value of various physical quantities with time. Response type
Butterworth response (the most flat response)
The Butterworth response can maximize the pass band flatness of the filter. The Butterworth filter is especially suitable for low frequency applications, which is very important for maintaining the flatness of the gain.
Bessel response

The delay makes the frequency based phase shift produce non sinusoidal signal distortion. Like Butterworth's response to maximizing the flatness of the band, the Bessel response minimizes the phase nonlinearity of the passband.
Chebyshev response
In some applications, the most important factor is the filter truncated the speed of unnecessary signals. If you can accept a band with some ripples, you can get a faster attenuation than the Butterworth filter. Appendix A contains a table for the parameters designed for up to 8 orders of Butterworth, Bessel, and schibershev response filter. The two form is used for the Chebyshev response: one for the 0.1dB maximum passband ripple>
