Pipe with slots, produced by one of several means, is used in water wells as a screening device. Slot openings maybe cut with a saw or oxyacetylene (cutting) torch or punched with a chisel-and-die casing perforator. The casing perforator is a tool used in the field to produce openings in well casing after it is set in the aquifer. Important limitations of perforated pipe are:(1)openings cannot be closely spaced; (2) percentage of open area is low; (3)size of slot openings varies significantly; and (4) openings small are difficult or impossible to produce.
Slotted steel pipe is not corrosion resistant and most methods of perforation tend to hasten corrosive attack on the metal when the water is aggressive. Jagged edges and slot surfaces are susceptible to selective corrosion. In general, the use of slotted pipe will increase maintenance costs and may significantly reduce the life of the well.
