Eero Aarnio

Interior designer, who is well known for his innovative furniture designs in the 1960’s, notably his plastic and fiberglass chairs. Aarnio studied at the Institute of Industrial Arts, Helsinki from 1954 to 1957. He started working with plastics in 1960, opened his own design office in 1962 and created two of the most famous chairs of the decade, the ’Ball’/’Globe’ chair and the ’Pastilli’/’Gyro’ chair for which he was awarded the American Industrial Design award in 1968.
The resistant and well workable fibre glass enabled Aarnio to design ergonomic forms without restrictions. With the Pastilli Chair and the Tomato Chair he earned international reputation. Chairs like these can be used both inside and outside. Pastilli gives a new, extraordinary idea of what a rocking chair is. Later in life, Eero Aarnio chose traditional materials, like wood.
