Taizhou had been one of the most impoverished regions in Zhejiang, during the Ming and Qing Dynasties when the central government enforced seclusion policies to forbid the people from conducting trade, manufacture, fishing, and seafare. The region suffered significant due to its paucity of agrarian lands. By the 1990, many Taizhouese, along with the neighbouring Wenzhou and Yiwu people, were one of the major "travelling trademen", when trade and market economy was illegal, and businessmen was discrimianed. For survival, these people were compelled to travel to various parts of China as small manufacters, traders, businessmen, shopowners, etc, suffering much hardship and bureaucratic violence outside of their hometown.

With the official introduction of free market economy and private business, Taizhou is the 4th most populous, and the 4rd largest industrial prefecture-level city in Zhejiang Provice as of 2011.
