The SMR scheme was based on technical specifications with certain defined packing requirements. The introduction of SMR grades was the result of the early R&D work undertaken by Rubber Research Institute of Malaysia to formulate a scheme for grading Malaysian rubber according to technical quality in response to the growing emphasis by consumers who require assurance that the technical properties of their purchases correspond to the intended application.
