The characteristics of plasma spraying

Plasma spraying working principle and equipment
Plasma spraying is to use rigid non transfer plasma arc as a heat source to spray powder material, it is primarily thermal spraying method. The spraying principle is through the plasma spray gun, produce plasma jet (arc flame flow). Gun tungsten electrode (cathode) and nozzle (anode) connect with power negative and positive respectively (workpiece not charged), through the high frequency oscillation to get the arc, make the supply gun work gas (Ar or N2) in arc under the action of ionization into plasma. Because of the heat shrinkage effect, magnetic contraction effect and mechanical contraction effect joint action/koinonia , arc is compressed, form the transfer plasma arc. Powder feed flow feeding powder material into the plasma arc, and rapid heating and melting or half molten state, with plasma jet high speed impact the pretreatment of base material surface, and form solid coating---coating layer in the substrate surface. So that the parts surface are sprayed can get different hardness, wear resistant, heat resistant, corrosion resistance, insulation, thermal insulation, lubrication, etc. various kinds of special physical and chemical properties, in order to meet the requirements of different parts

According to the plasma spraying working principle, the complete plasma spraying system consist of power supply, high frequency oscillator (arc strike device), control panel, powder feeder, spray gun, cooling system/water chiller, and gases.
Plasma spraying technology characteristics
Because of the heat shrinkage effect, magnetic contraction effect and mechanical contraction effect of joint action/koinonia, by the formation of the non transfer plasma arc can get higher temperature, it above at 10000°C, and also the heating concentrated, so can melt all kinds of high melting point, high hardness powder materials. As plasma flame flow rate as high as 1000 m/s, spraying powder speed can reach 180 ~ 600 m/s, so can get compact structure, low porosity, and base material with high bonding strength (and ~ 70 Mpa), and coating thickness is easy to control.
During plasma spraying process the coating parts do not have charge, and the heating temperature is lower (surface temperature generally no more than 250 °C), so normally the spraying process parts no deformation, basic material (substrate) organization performance also no change, and do not change the nature of heat treatment. Particularly suitable for high strength steel, thin wall parts, slender parts to spray coating.

Plasma spraying coating is the basis of the purpose and characteristics, can be divided into protective coating and functional coating, protective coating such as wear-resisting, antifriction, solid lubricant coating, surface fatigue resistance coating, corrosion resistant coating, heat resistant coating, thermal barrier coating, etc. These coating have mature technology, and has been widely used in industrial. Functional coating such as superconducting coating, optical coating, biological coating, etc., are gradually getting people's attention at present.
