Borage seed oil has one of the highest amounts of γ-linolenic acid (GLA) of seed oils — higher than blackcurrant seed oil orevening primrose oil, to which it is considered similar. GLA typically comprises about 24% of the oil.
Borage, whose botanical name is Borago officinalis, is an annual herb in the Boraginaceae family. There are as many as 2,500 species in this family of plants. The specific designation officinalis indicates the herb's inclusion in official listings of medicinal plants.
Uses
Borage has been used in European herbal medicine since the Middle Ages, alone and in combination with fish oil in rheumatoid arthritis, atopic eczema, and osteoporosis, although limited clinical evidence is available to support these uses.
