The heritage of Yunchih Black Tea has been filed as the geographic trademark, Sun Moon Lake Black Tea® in order to keep a promise of the top quality black tea in the varieties, farming environment, tea processing, and safety of pesticide residuals. The certificated farms must follow all regulation of the farming and processing procedures as well as be located within the area of 500-meter to 1,000-meter altitude of Yuchih, Nantou, where has been the ideal place for black tea since the early 1900s. The most famous black tea includes Red Jade Black Tea TTC_TTES No.18 Taiwan #18, Assam Black Tea TTC_TTES No.8, and Taiwan Black Tea. In particular, Red Jade Black Tea owns a natural fragrance of cinnamon with a slight hint of mint. Such enhancing aroma is from the wild mountain tea and its distinctive flavor grows after a sip. The special traits make it one of the best black teas around the world with a top class of reputations.
1. Origin of Sun Moon Lake Black Tea
The origin of the name Shui Soalian comes from the territory of aboriginals in Zhanghua’s mountain called Soalian. As Sun Moon Lake is located here, shui (water) was added to form the name Shui Soalian. Assam tea from Ceylon and India is commonly regarded as the best black tea in the world. However, black tea produced in Yuchi Township, Nautou county of Taiwan has undergone continual strain improvements at the Taiwan tea research and extension station since the Japanese occupation. This had made Yuchi Township the leading producer of black tea in Taiwan. Sun Moon Lake has diverse forest forms at mid-to-high altitude, and a fertile and unpolluted filed stratum. In addition to annual temperature average and steady humidity, these elements made the top grade black tea produced in Yuchi Township and the Sun Moon Lake region, renowned as Assam Variety, one of the main teas exported from Taiwan decades ago. It was also offered by the Japanese people to their emperor as royal tribute, and won considerable acclaim alongside Ceylon and Darjeeling black tea on the Western tea market. Its quality and charm is widely accepted and recognized by consumers, making Sun Moon Lake Black tea world famous even today.
2. 921-Earthquake Reconstruction
In the midnight of 21th Sept. 1999, a great earthquake, which was later called as 921 earthquake, struck and woke up everyone in Taiwan. The epicenter was at southwest of Sun Moon Lake, near the town of Jiji, Nantou, causing 2,415 people killed, 11,305 injured, and numerous people being homeless. Top government officials toured the disaster area and gave instructions that world-class re-planning and reconstruction should be carried out to give the lake area a new lease on life. Mountains in the Scenic Area rise from between 600 and 2,000 meters. From the highest ridges in the eastern section, the landscape gradually turns to rippling foothills and then to fast-flowing rivers and sweeping, verdant flatlands in the west. The latter, geographically a part of the Puli Basin, is the only section to preserve an alpine lake. The central location of Sun Moon Lake also means that the bountiful tourism opportunities available in Nantou County are only a short drive away. The area draws tourists from all over the country and its unique attractions are increasingly a magnet for international visitors.
