Operating principle :
Coiling of the thermostatic bimetal achieves greater "active length" within a small space,thus maximizing the possible displacement . One end of the spiral/helical coil is permanently fixed . The loose end describes a rotary path in response to a change in temperature .
The choice between a spiral or a helical coil depends on the intended application .
Spiral are preferred for measuring ambient temperature (room temperature ,sauna thermometer ).
Helical coils are more suited to measuring temperature in closed vessels (air,fluid,or solids), as the temperature measuring and indicated points are physically Separate (immersion rod).
Butterfly valve operating mechanisms require stronger thermostatic bimetals as the work demands a high torque .
spiral may also be used in current measuring devices (direct passage of electrical current through the spiral).
Counter-acting spiral are employed for ambient temperature compensation .
When dimensioning housings to accommodate spirals or helical coils,it should be remembered that the spiral/helical coils will change dimension (spirals more and helical coils less ),and that they must not be allowed to come into contact with the housing .
Manufacture :
1.Spiral
These are coiled with intermediate layers to set the distances between the windings.Ideally,the intermediate layers should consist of one or more thermostatic bimetal spirals. The coiled unit is stablished by a process know as "forming annealing" and the intermediate layers then removed. For precision measuring instruments,the individual spirals must be aged once again after forming.
2.Helical coils
These are coiled on a mandrel. The rate of expansion in relation to flexibility has to be determined empirically and taken into account when dimensioning the mandrel. The pitch of the helical coil can be set by adjusting the feed rate .
