Bio-Methanation Systems/Anaerobic Bio-Treatment provides the mechanism by which dissolved organic carbon, represented by COD (Chemical Oxygen Demand) or BOD5 (5-day Biological Oxygen Demand), can be converted to methane and carbon dioxide and fixed in insoluble biomass. COD/BOD5  is removed from wastewater as gaseous products.  Some carbon and nitrogen are fixed or used by anaerobic microbial cultures to grow a relatively small amount of new cell mass (approximately two percent (2%) of COD fed), which results in a very significant reduction in sludge generation compared to treatment in aerobic systems.
The microbial consortium utilized in this treatment system is composed of hydrolytic, acetogenic, and methanogenic bacteria, along with minor constituencies of sulfate-reducing and hydrogen-transferring bacteria.  This consortium, which grows as a pellet or granule up to ¼” in diameter, acts in unison to convert complex organic molecules to methane and carbon dioxide.  Since the consortium is anaerobic, growth of new cell mass is low rate and low yield.  Reaction rates, however, can be very fast when de-coupled from growth rates.  High-density systems accomplish this desirable wastewater treatment goal.
Expanded-bed anaerobic treatment will reduce high COD in wastewater or process water by approximately ninety percent (90%), with very low energy and maintenance requirements.  The Bio-Methanator is a high-rate, high-density treatment system, requiring very little operator attention and maintenance.  It produces a significant amount of useful methane, which may be burned for beneficial use to offset other natural gas requirements.

The Expanded-Bed Anaerobic Bio-Reactor (Bio-Methanator) incorporates a design for maximum removal of COD/BOD5.  Biological pellets or granules increase contact density between wastes and microbes, which maximizes reaction rates.  In this unit, naturally formed granular sludge is used in the bottom of the bio-reactors in upflow, expanded-bed mode.  A proprietary separation device in the top of the bio-reactors maintains the sludge bed.

The separation device is an design consisting of a gas lift device.  The gas lift is used to maintain gas-laden granules in the active zone of the reactor, while allowing clarified, treated water to exit.
