The hive tool is important for removing the lid to the hive, as well as for separating and cleaning the frames situated in the hive box that are filled with honey. These multipurpose levers are made from metal and, according to the University of Illinois Cooperative Extension, a lever that is 10 inches long is the best size for beekeepers to gain leverage when prying apart heavy frames. The tool fits snugly in the palm of the beekeeper's hand, and must be cleaned from time to time to remove excess beeswax that fills large gaps in the hive> The tool also cleans off propolis, which is the sap used by bees to fill the small gaps between hives, and honey.
