1-Monochloroacetic Acid process description.

Monochloroacetic acid production Process is directed batch wise at three steps as following:

A.Reaction:

       Certain value of glacial acetic acid is heated up to about 90 degrees centigrade and transferred to two glass lined reactors with impeller type agitator. Certain amounts of acetic anhydride and sulfur mono chloride are added as catalyst. Then chlorine gas is injected to the reactor and temperature is kept at about 100 C. After about 50- 70 hours reaction is completed. Molten MCA is cooled up to 70C and purged by smooth flow of air for removing of non reacted dissolved chlorine.

     Vapors exit from reactors are passed through tow sequential tubular glass condenser which is cooled with cooling water and chilled brine with temperature of 25C and -10C respectively. Condensable vapors are recycled to reactors. Hcl vapors after condensers absorbed and cooled by two sequential graphite absorbers and makes dilute and concentrated hydrochloric acid. Un reacted chlorine gas from reactors is passed through hydrochloric acid scrubbers then transferred to hypo absorber tower and produce sodium hypochlorite solution.

B. Crystallization

Molten MCA is transferred to glass lined crystallizers with anchor type agitator and mixed with mother liquor and a few quantity of water then gradually cooled up to about 30C until MCA crystals are formed and grown.

 

C. Centrifuging and packing

The slurry from crystallizer is transferred to a double stage pusher centrifuge and MCA crystals are separated mother, washed and packed in 25 kg bags. A part of mother liquor is recycled to crystallizer and remain is wasted.
