Cloves are the aromatic flower buds of a tree in the family Myrtaceae. Cloves are harvested at 1.5–2.0 cm long, and consist of a long calyx that terminates in four spreading sepals, and four unopened petals that form a small central ball.Cloves are the immature unopened flower buds of a tropical tree. When fresh, they are pink, dried, they turn to a rust-brown colour. Measuring 12-16 mm (1/2”-5/8”) long, they resemble small nails, with a tapered stem. The large end of the clove is the four-pointed flower bud. The dried flower buds are called cloves. Natural Clove is a small reddish brown flower bud of the tropical evergreen tree Syzygium aromaticum.

Culinary Uses

  1. Clove is used as a flavoring agents for meats, curries, and marinades, as well as fruit such as apples, pears or rhubarb.
  2. Clove gives aromatic and flavoured qualities to hot beverages.
  3. Clove is the common element in spice blends such as pumpkin pie spice and other spices.
  4. Green cloves are used in pickles.
  5. It pairs well with cinnamon, allspice, vanilla, red wine and basil as well as onion, citrus peel, star anise, or peppercorns.
