Physostigmine, a toxic alkaloid is sourced from the Calabar bean plant.
Physostigmine helps prolong the activity of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter that stimulates gastric secretion, contracts smooth muscles, and dilates blood vessels.
This crystalline alkaloid (C15H21N3O2) is used in medicines as a miotic for the treatment of glaucoma, a cholinergic agent, and to enhance memory in patients with Alzheimer's disease.
Licensed in several countries as an agent for reversing the effect of drugs and poisons causing the anticholinergic syndrome, studies conducted more than two decades ago have suggested that physostigmine may improve memory in people with or without dementia.
