Devils claw is a medicinal plant of the sesame family, and is native to South Africa.The name, Devil's Claw, is derived from the herbs unusual fruits, which are covered with small hooks, similar to claws.
Devil's claw has been traditionally used to provide relief of joint pain caused by osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis. It has also been shown to alleviate muscle pain and enhance mobility for people with muscle injuries. Devil's claw is extremely bitter, and makes a very good digestive aid.
The two active ingredients in devil's claw are beta-sitosterol and harpagoside. It is thought that these possess anti-inflammatory properties. The British Herbal Pharmacopoeia recognizes devil's claw as having analgesic, sedative and diuretic properties.
