All electrical equipments/ machines are designed to operate at rated voltage. Power is supplied to the consumers at these standards rating but due to technical limits & commercial inbiabilities it is not possible to supply power at rating and a wide spectrum of voltage variation is  witnessed. The problem is more acute where cluster of industries exists which causes considerable losses, directly due to over drawing of current and indirectly due to breakdown in Machines, interruption in production process and it's bad effects on quality  products.

FOR INDUSTRIAL UNITS RUNNING ROUND THE CLOCK: The industrial units running round the clock, usually face the problem of low and high voltage. 90% of industrial load is of motors. Electric motors draw considerably high current at low & high voltage. This higher current affects the electrical motors (particularly smaller capacity motors upto 7.5 H.P.) in three ways.

 

Higher current produces higher losses in electrical motors which causes premature failure of winding.

 

These higher losses of electric motors also increase the losses of cables, switches, transformers and other associated equipments.

 

For smooth continuous operation of motors, overload relays are usually set at 20% higher setting.

  

WHO NEEDS Automatic Voltage Controller:  

 

The industrial units having abnormally higher failure rate of Electrical Equipments such as bulbs, tubes, chokes, starter, contactor coils & motors (particularly smaller capacity motors upto 7.5 H.P.) Etc. Should verify that it may be due to HIGHER voltage. You may note down Hourly readings of voltage variation for few days. If you find that input voltage is above 230 volts single phase/400 volts Three phase even for few hours a day, then you definitely require a Automatic Voltage Controller.

HOW TO ACCESS HIGHER LOSSES & LOW POWER FACTOR IN INDUSTRIAL UNITS WITHOUT INSTALLING STABILIZER

 

Note down hourly readings of current and voltage of one motor operating at constant load for  2-3 days. From the different readings you will observe that the current drawn by the motor is minimum at rated volts as compared to the current drawn at other voltages. This means that power consumed by the motor is minimum at rated voltage.

 

Also note down hourly readings of voltage and K.W. from your Electronic Energy Meter for 2-3 days. From the readings you will observe that K.W. is minimum at rated volts in most of the readings as compared to the higher voltage.

If you find that the above collected details are true then you will certainly have the advantages after installing the Servo stabilizer as mentioned on succeeding page 3.

  

ADVERSE EFFECTS OF SINGLE PHASING

      1. The line current increases by 1.5 times.

           If the relay setting is at 15-20% higher than actual operating current then the relay will      take     4-6 minutes to trip.

 The motor (particularly smaller capacity motors upto 7.5 H.P.) cannot withstand this high current for such a long time and in most of the cases it burns out before the relay trips.

 Heavy short circuit current flows through the relays, contactors, cables etc.

 Under this condition when the relay, contactor trips, they produce sparks and some times bursts..

 

This further damages the switchgear and in some of the cases may cause fire also

 

  1. With the installation of the stabilizer and maintaining at rated voltage, the motor will operate smoothly drawing 15-20% lesser current and correspondingly the relay setting can be reduced by 15-20%. In case single phasing occurs, the relay will trip in 40-50 seconds. The motor can withstand the high current for this period and will be safe. Also, the relays, contactors, switchgears, etc. Incorporated with the motor will be safe.

Demand of power is progressively increasing over the years. To meet-up this demand, the Electricity Boards and other Power utilities had to increase their Transmission and Distribution         (T & D) network. Though there has been some investments in power generation, but a gap between power are not only incapable of carrying additional power, but also forced to have line losses through lengthy feeders, causing alarming voltage fluctuation at consumer end.

This low/high voltage is applied to all electrical machines like Transformers, Motors etc., hence causing loss in substantial electrical energy, besides damage to the equipments. This compelled is conscious for Conservation of Energy, as Power Tariff is ever increasing.

In addition with this, low/high voltage is also causing "Low Power Factor". Since "Capacitors Bank" installed by the desired level. Therefore, consumers only are penalized to pay compensation, even without utilizing the power.

Technology

 automatic voltage regulator, which primarily consists of the following features :

  • Linear, plus / minus type vertical rolling contact voltage regulator
    For making these regulators, we use heavy section of electrolytic grade rectangular copper strip instead of copper wire in order to minimize the losses & increase the efficiency of equipment. We also employ self lubricating Carbon Roller Assemblies instead of ordinary Carbon Brushes that offers more reliability and trouble free performance of the equipment.
  • Double wound buck / boost type series transformer
    In our Buck / Boost transformer, we make use of CRGO lamination to reduce iron losses. The coils of Buck / Boost transformer are wound with heavy section of multi strips electrolytic copper to minimize copper losses to get better efficiency of the equipment.
  • Electronic control circuit and meter panel
    Automatic Voltage Controller usually consists of very simple electronic control voltage circuit for monitoring and controlling voltage, repair and maintenance of which is very easy. The regulator and Buck / Boost transformer are oil cooled, placed in same or separate sheet steel tanks. These devices are provided with radiators for effective cooling. The coils of voltage regulators & Buck / Boost Transformers are vacuum impregnated and oven dried as per IS.
