Traditional and Modern LED
There are many advantage of LED. This is an article on what are they and why?
Light Emitting Diode, most commonly known as LED. However, within the industrial, it also has several other names. ‘Solid State Lighting’ and ‘Cold Source Lighting’ are particularly interesting, as it is named after LED’s great properties.
Solid State Lighting
Solid State Lighting as the name suggest, the LED is in a solid state rather than a gas state. This is key reason why LED lighting is better than traditional lighting. As traditional lighting contains gas, many of them are harmful to human and other living things. As a result, traditional lighting is always a potential danger in all areas, during production, usage and disposal.
Production, a lot of hazard gases is concentrate into one production area. These gases will leak out a little no matter what. It can be leak out via air or worse leak out through drainage system. Causing harmful chemical to leak into our water system and our eco system.
Usage, the currently all the manufacturer of traditional lighting uses glass to contain the gas. Therefore, all location using traditional lamps also means there a risk of broken glass as well. Due to production limitation the glass cannot be shutter resistance, further increase the danger. At the same time, should the glass breaks high concentration of chemical will be released. This is especially critical to closed indoor space. Worse case is that the lamp is broken onto an object, where the high concentration of gas will liquefy and contaminate the object as well.
Disposal, this is by far the most important factor. As many countries and region, have not foreseen this. A lot of used lamps are just piled together into a land fill. The chemical within the lamp will slowly but surly leak out into the soil. Which is then pass into sea, this is then affecting the eco system and potentially our drink water system.
Although each traditional lamp only contains a limited amount of chemical, but once it has enter our eco system. The amount will rapidly build up, as there are a lot of lights around the world.
The above is a very important factor why Singbee has moved to LED (see about us for further detail) and our LED follows RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substance) standard very strictly. As the importance of a clean and health eco system is too important to be ignored.
At the same time, as the lamp source is solid and it is very strong unlike glass. The lamp source is always impact resistance. From Singbee long years of experience, there are been no lamp physical damage that has caused the LED itself to be unable to functional. So you can say good bye to days where you need to use a potato to unscrew a broken bulb or risk getting yourself cut, if you are using an LED light from Singbee.
Cold Source Lighting
A few people probably had got burnt from a light and more people probably had wasted plenty of time waiting for the light to cool down before changing it. As explain in ‘What is LED’. Singbee LED converts electricity directly to light rather than converting it to heat before it is converted to light. Combine with Singbee low power heat management system (see Low Power LED for detail), the LED lamp source is always cool enough to touch. This is great for several reasons:
- 1. The obvious one will be you will not be burnt by LED any longer J
- 2. The lamp will not cause the environment temperature to rise. This provides an additional energy saving for refrigerators, cold stores and air-conditions spaces. It also provide much higher comfortable for hot indoor environments such as kitchens. When you have three cookers, five steamers and two ovens turn on, you really do not want an extra hot spotlight onto your head.
Flexible Lighting
This is the one unique lighting property that Singbee LED has. Most lighting comes in a very standard 360 degrees light, due to technological limitation, the lamp must produce a 360 degrees and as it is gas state, there is also a limitation on the color as well.
Singbee LED, has four different types of beam angle of LED made. This ensures direction of lighting to be very accurate without the lost of much light. Providing a great flexibility to all designers should they require a certain atmosphere to be created.
Most importantly this greatly reduces ‘light pollution’ (having lights where it is unwanted) without wasting the light energy. This is an important factor for displays and streets. Having light pollution in a display will cause the intended display object to lose the focus. For streets, light been shine on the side of the road or into houses. Will disturbed the quality of sleep both for people lighting around it and the wild life as well. The wild life, with the light being shine to their home will assume it is still daytime when it is night, causing it to have abnormal behaviors.
No unwanted damaging lights.
The inflexibility of traditional lamps causes it to give out invisible light as well as visible lights. Invisible light are mainly Ultraviolet(UV) and Infra-red (IR). These are unwanted for two reasons:
- 1. Although the light is invisible and unwanted, it still takes energy to make them. Therefore, it is a pure waste of energy.
- 2. It is these light wavelength that causes paint to faint away. Therefore, making artificial color objects specially historical object to fade overtime. Although most object can be repaint, but historical items specially large items such as old aircrafts are very expensive to maintain and no matter how careful the restoration is, each restoration will cause damage to it, costing us to lose a bit of our important and irreplaceable history.
The above is four major reasons apart from the well known ones why LED is better than traditional lights. Please kindly note, some of the above is only applicable for Singbee LED low power. High power LED will still be too hot to touch in some areas and will require a lens to reduce the light pollution. Where as low power LED can have directional lighting without the needs of secondary lens (for more detail please see light distribution).
