What is a Self-aligning Ball Bearing?
These are bearing that are able to accommodate a small angular misalignment which may occur due to improper mounting or deflection. A self aligning ball bearing consists of inner ring and an outer ring. A ball assembly which is made up of two rows is contained within the outer ring. The ball assembly has a common raceway in the outer ring which is concave and spherical, and a double raceway in the inner ring. This design enables ball bearing to carry out the task of self alignment by allowing some degree of angular misalignment of the shaft with respect to the housing. The main feature of these self aligning ball bearing is the ability by the balls, cage and inner to freely rotate at a certain limited angle.
As compared to all other rolling bearings, the self aligning ball bearing has the lowest friction and therefore can maintain cooler temperatures even when running at high speeds. They are used in radial loads as well as light axial loads. However, they are not able to perform the duties of carrying pure axial loads.
