FAQ: skving hoses vs non-skive hose? Which is better? If we skive hose,We need to invest on skiving machine and we can use poor quality machined hose fittings crimp any brand hoses, am i right?
Answer 1: It depends on the manufacturer of the hose and coupling system. Crimping recomendations will always advise if you need to skive or not. Mixing and matching hose and fittings from differnt suppliers and then decidicing to skive or not is a sure fire way to head towards leaks or blow off. Stick with one brand of hose and fittings and follow their directions on crimping and skiving. Gates offer a full range of non skive hose and fittings on all braided and spiral hose up 2" (including 6 wire). If you have a brand that does require skiving then a skiving machine is safer and faster than knives.
Different hose manufacturers have different outside diameters on 2 wire hose for example. You can over crimp on some and under crimp on others if you use the same crimp specifications. And keep in mind all makes of collars are also different again in regards to wall thickness etc.
If you are going to use old hose ( and yes I have seen customers insisting on using an existing hose ) to fit a new fitting on or change to a different fitting you have to skive since the outside rubber gets hard and brittle and most of the time blows off or leaks after a while, and make the customer sign a waiver if he insists on this or send him away!
If you are however planning to make up large 400bar+ (5800psi+) hoses some fittings require an internal skive. This you can't do with a knife and you will need to invest in a skiving machine.
