Function of potentiometer:
A potentiometer is a manually adjustable electrical resistor that uses three terminals. It is a simple electro-mechanical transducer. It converts rotary or linear motion from the operator into a change of resistance, and this change is used to control the levels of output. It is sometimes known as POTS.Potentiometer is an adjustable electronic components,which plays main roles in the circuit on the following several aspects
1.As a voltage divider:Potentiometer is a continuously adjustable resistor. When potetiometer’s stem or sliding handle move on the resistor body, the output of the potentiometer can be obtained output of voltage with certain related to the potentiometer applied voltage and movable arm or travel .
2.As a variable resistor :When potentiometer is used as a rheostat, it should be taken into two end devices.Thus within the limited travel range of potentiometer,which can be gotten smooth, continuously changable resistance value.
3.As the current controller :Potentiometer is used as the current controller, one of the designate current output must be sliding contact terminal.
